Your Guide to Air Travel

IMPORTANT NEWS OF 1800HRS UTC TODAY 28AUG2008 ZOOM AIRLINES has suspended all operations.

Air Travel

There are three sites that will answer your questions and depending on what you want and where you wish to go, one of them, maybe two will answer your queries.

If you want one particular airline we may have that covered for you in a following page, but this page has information about the latest sites that compare fares with numerous airlines. I hope you agree with me, that one site with access to numerous airlines, is far easier for you to plan a trip.

Kayak Software Corporation (UK)Kayak.com is a new kind of travel website.

Created by co-founders of Orbitz, Travelocity and Expedia, Kayak.com is a search engine that helps consumers find great travel deals from 100+ other travel sites.

Kayak.com finds fares from airlines like Jet Blue that don’t sell through online agencies. In fact, Kayak.com displays more choices of available itinerary/price combinations than any other travel site.

More tips for finding those cheaper fares

It is important to compare fares from different sources. Airlines have one fare, their web site has another, travel agencies may have access to different fares and then there are Consolidators who buy in bulk, they say and can offer you an even cheaper fare. But be careful when it comes to reading the small print. Rules and Regulations for all these fares will be different. You must shop around.

As you probably know airfares in general are based on supply and demand and which way you are travelling at what time of year. So the season of travel is important.

High Season is when most people travel and at holiday times, such as Easter and Christmas. Low Season is usually when the weather is not so good, but then we also have Mid Season or Shoulder Season as the airlines like to call it.

Most airfares too are based on the season of the initial flight. The outbound flight and dates dictates the round trip fare, so if you want to travel in High Season try and book that first flight for the end of Shoulder Season, then your round trip fare will be based on the Shoulder Season fare, although you are travelling home in High Season. Many people know of this information so these flights book up early, so don’t delay in making your flight reservations. I’m sure there are some exceptions to this rule, so ask at the time of booking.

Be Flexible with your flight times and days of travel
As we say, supply and demand dictates the fares, so if you want to travel Friday or Saturday, be prepared for a higher fare. If you travel Thursday or Monday it maybe slightly cheaper and to travel mid-week is the best fare of all.

Depending on the airline and whether it is a scheduled airline or a charter airline, fares are different depending on how far in advance you make the reservation. On scheduled airlines there are about 5 different fares to fly from City A to City B. For those that can book and pay, maybe, 6 months in advance is the lowest fares, to book and pay, maybe, 3 months in advance there is another fare, slightly higher and so on right up to whether you can book 21 days prior to travel and at least 14 days prior to travel. The airlines move seats around at these fares too, so if a given fare at 2 months prior suddenly becomes full they release seats from another fare to accommodate the increased demand etc. Is it complicated?

Value for money
Finding the lowest fare for a given date and route can be rewarding, but be sure you know whether you are flying non stop or changing planes en route or not. Sometimes airlines say, well we are inconveniencing you by flying a round about route with two or more stops on the way, so we shall charge a lower fare, but do you want that? Non stop flights can be more expensive. Direct flights don’t necessarily mean the flight is Non-Stop either. Be careful “direct” means the flight will fly from City A to City B without a change of planes, but it could stop en route somewhere.
