What are they?
They offer dormitory-style rooms with separate quarters for men and women. Some also have private family and couples rooms. All hostels provide a blanket and pillow. Linens are often included in the price, or available for rental.
Most offer fully equipped self-service kitchens or cafeterias, dining areas, secure storage and common rooms for relaxing and socializing with other travellers. Some have laundry facilities, travel libraries and concierge service.
There are a few that even have hot tubs, swimming pools, barbecues and an ocean at its front door. Most have secure 24-hour access and are handicapped accessible.
Why stay in one?
Most offer a cheap, clean, safe place to stay and the communal atmosphere makes it easy to make friends and pick up insider travel tips. For those journeying solo, they offer the best way to meet fellow travellers and even find travel companions.
What facilities are available?
Ranging from a bunk bed to a cot, some have rooms with 2 to 10 beds, while others offer orphanage-like dormitories that pack in 20 or more. Sleeping arrangements are usually single-sex, though co-ed rooms are sometimes available.
Many also offer private "family rooms" for couples or groups. Sheets, a sleep-sheet (two sheets sewn together like a sleeping bag), pillows and blankets may be available (usually for a small fee). As this differs from place to place, it's smart to travel with a sleeping bag, sleep-sheet, sarong (which becomes a convenient sheet) or combination of all three.
How much do they cost?
Though the cost varies from country to country, they always offer the best value for your money, especially if you're travelling by yourself. In general, the prices range from £4.00 - £18.00 per night for dormitory accommodations.
